Preparing Your Master Programme

Preparing your Master Programme

1. Choosing your master specialisation

If you will start the Human Geography Master programme at the Radboud University Nijmegen you will first have to make a choice for one of its master specialisations:

You can also download a nice flyer giving a general overview over all our master specialisations.

The master programme can also be conducted in dual mode (studying next to working in the human geographic profession). Additionally there are two further programmes, namely the enhancing post-master programme for secondary teacher training also called educational master, and the research master.

2. Preparing your master programme

Our master programme is built around the master thesis research as its backbone, and through your choice of the theme of your master thesis research you determine the main focus of your master programme. Also the elective courses, you would like to take are usually related to your master thesis research or your specific interests in that field. The master thesis research is also conducted in the framework of a research apprenticeship in an external organisation (which enables a smooth transition from university to your later professional practice). Thus the choice of the theme of your master thesis re-search, the choice of elective courses and the choice of an apprenticeship organisation are very crucial for the success of your master studies. Consequently in our master programme you will start preparing your master thesis research and make choices for your elective courses etc. right at the start of the master programme. In this way students have a crucial responsibility for (the success of) their own master programme and for their own time management. Since making these choices and the application for apprenticeship positions will take some time and to make sure that you do not miss any opportunities it is strongly advised not to wait until the start of the programme, but to seriously think over the possible subjects of your master thesis research and to inform yourself on possible elective courses and possible apprenticeship organisations well before the start of the programme. You will find information on research profiles of our master thesis supervisors and their suggestions for possible themes for your master thesis research here. In some cases they even provide some ideas on possible apprenticeship organisations, you might want to check out. Your supervisor will also advise you on all choices you will have to make. Of course the supervisors are only allocated to the student as soon as possible after the start of the programme. Nevertheless, if you need some advice in advance, do not hesitate to contact one of the master thesis supervisors. If possible they will certainly try to help you, even before the programme has started. First suggestions for possible elective courses can be found on the page in which we describe the specific master specialisation in more detail (see links above). You will also find an archive of past master theses here. We finally also offer an archive of past apprenticeship organisations here. You could peek into all this information to get inspiration and ideas. You can also download a general student guide ‘Student-guide Master Human Geography’, in which further details on how to make your choices are elaborated. Again we strongly advise you to read that student guide thoroughly before the start of the programme and to prepare yourself as much as possible so that you can make your final choices without any delay. By being well prepared you will lay an important basis for the success of your own master programme!!
