Foreign Students
We warmly welcome foreign students in our courses and in our educational programme. Especially as human geographers we feel it as an enrichment to have students with very different backgrounds in our courses. A large number of courses in our bachelor programme and most courses in our master programme are taught in English. Most literature and text books we use are also in English (even if the course might be taught in Dutch). We also have a very international staff, and thus you do not need to be astonished if you here us speak Spanish, English, Dutch, German, French, Italian, or Indonesian.
Since our University is only six kilometres from the German border, our educational programmes might also be a not too far off option for German students. They will very soon notice that even if we are close to Germany, we are still in another country and our university system and teaching methods are different. But that is exactly the interesting and enriching part of studying abroad. Particularly the number of students in our programmes are usually much smaller, then what you might usually see in Germany. Therefore we also use much more interactive teaching techniques. It also makes our programme very adaptable so that we can usually react quickly on the latest developments in our discipline, which implies that our programme really offers training in state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in our field. In contrast to many German universities our master programme can be completed in one year. (This would even fit into a two-term stay in Nijmegen as exchange student.) Finally we also offer the possibility to study the master programme in dual mode (working as geographic professional next to studying for your master), and in that framework even have a German partner as potential employer for German dual-mode master students. Our practical experience shows that learning Dutch for native Germans is usually 'a piece of cake'. After just a few months German students are fluent in Dutch and until then your fellow students will help you out and the lecturers will offer you extra support if needed. Almost all lecturers speak German as well. The university also offers intensive Dutch language courses for native German speaking students. Many German students even live at the German side of the border and commute to University.
In general, to support foreign students the Radboud University has a central International Office, which is your point of entry regarding applications, registration and accommodation. At the Student Information Desk you can get answers to all your practical questions. More information about registration and accommodation can be found under 'Practical Information' at the website of the central International Office.
Additionally the International Office of the Nijmegen School of Management, where our Department is a part of, will provide you with further and more specific tips and tricks for your stay with us.
In the framework of a student exchange programme such as Socrates/Erasmus you can take one or more courses of our bachelor or master programme or even take the full master programme.
In the latter case, you might also like to become the formal credits for it in the form of a master diploma of the Radboud University Nijmegen. If you want to know more about rules and regulations or procedures for this it is best to contact our study advisor, Jackie van de Walle (j.vandewalle@fm.ru.nl, Room TvA 3.1_38, tel: +31-(0)24 - 361 60 49), or master co-ordinator Prof. dr. Huib Ernste (h.ernste@fm.ru.nl, Room TvA 3.1_46, tel: +31-(0)24 - 361 19 25)
